Human Remains Found as Bushfires Ravage Southeastern Australia

Human remains have been found in a bushfire-affected area of southeastern Australia as large fires continue to burn across the state of Victoria, authorities said Sunday.

Victoria Police said officers accessed a fire-damaged stretch off Yarck Road near the town of Gobur on Sunday afternoon, where the remains were discovered about 100 meters from a vehicle in the Longwood bushfire zone. The person has not yet been formally identified.

The discovery comes as bushfires burning gets out of control during a summer heatwave that has destroyed homes, razed farmland, and cut power to thousands of residents across the region.
More than 350,000 hectares (about 860,000 acres) of bushland have burned in Victoria since midweek, according to authorities. At least 300 structures, including homes, have been destroyed, and thousands of households remain without electricity.
